Debond Analyses for Stitched Composite Structures

چکیده

The effect of stitching on mode I and mode II strain energy release rates for debond configurations is studied using an analysis based on plate finite elements and the virtual crack closure technique. The stitches were modeled as discrete nonlinear fastener elements with a compliance determined by experiment. The axial and shear behavior of the stitches was considered with both the compliances and failure loads assumed to be independent. The mode I strain energy release rate, GI, was shown to decrease once the debond had grown beyond the first row of stitches and was reduced to zero for long debonds, however, the mode II strain energy release rate, GII, continued to be of significant magnitude over the range of debond lengths considered.

Mechanical Properties of Composite Materials Made of 3D Stitched Woven-knitted Preforms

This article presents an experimental investigation carried out to understand the mechanical behavior of composite materials made of 3D stitched woven-knitted basalt fabrics. The innovative preforms used consist of two outer layers of a plain woven fabric combined with two inner layers of weft-knitted fabrics. The weft-knitted fabrics selected for the study were varied plain knit, 1 × 1 rib, Mi...

THE EFFECT OF FIBER-MATRIX REACTIONS ON THE INTERFACE PROPERTIES IN A SCS-6/Ti-24Al-11 Nb COMPOSITE

The interfacial structure/property relationships of a representative composite system consisting of SIC (SCS-6) fibers in a T&Al + Nb intermetallic alloy have been investigated. Two samples were fabricated at 1040°C with different exposure times in order to vary the amount of fiber-matrix reaction. This resulted in samples with reaction zone thicknesses (S) of 1.1 and 1.7pm, while ensuring roug...

In-situ transmission electron microscopy studies of polymer-carbon nanotube composite deformation.

This paper demonstrates the viability of in-situ transmission electron microscopy for studying the deformation mechanisms of polymer nano-composites. In-situ straining studies are performed on carbon multiwalled nanotube (MWNT)-polystyrene composite films. The experiments show that load transfer across the nanotube-polystyrene interface is operative well into the plastic deformation regime of t...

Structural Health Monitoring Of Composite Patch Repairs Using Embedded Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors and Neural Network Techniques

Modern developments in the space of aeronautics render explicit the need for exploitation of air structures up to their designed structural life or even further and consequently the need for adoption of maintenance techniques supporting their structural integrity in an acceptable, according to their designed criteria, manner. One of the most promising techniques is the so called “composite patc...
